Design and Technologies
By learning about different shelters students will discover what characteristics are needed to design their own shelters. The recycle center is aimed at providing information and characteristics of the different materials that are considered waste in Australia and the 'design sheet' is needed so that students can design their own shelters using materials from the recycle center.
By doing this students can learn how to minimise waste and make ecofriendly shelters thereby minimising their footprint on the world. In addition to this students will be required to reflect on their designs and try to come up further ideas to help make their shelters more sustainable.
The aim is that students will partake in authentic activity based learning to expand their knowledge and understanding of how much waste is produced by people and how this waste can be reused to improve sustainability.
Differentiation
If there are students with disabilities or learning difficulties in your classroom, try to have a teacher aide or other helper in the class when you do the written parts of the unit. Alternatively students can work in pairs or small groups to complete the activities.
Students who are gifted or talented, especially in the use of technology or art could expand their shelter and provide a more in depth explanation of their design.
